Paper like Leather, Bark like Thread: Korean Paper Techniques

Description: Korean papermaking has a history almost as long as papermaking itself. Korean paper, known as Hanji, is made from the inner bark of the Mulberry tree renowned for its long and strong fibers. This makes hanji ideal for an array of applications suitable for book and fiber arts. Students will add water to hanji to learn a felting and collage technique called joomchi, which results in textured paper that is ideal for textile work, light and durable book covers, and sculpture. Joomchi can also be modified to create varying thicknesses of hanji yarn. Using mulberry bark, students will also learn to make thread for decorative bindings, weaving or installation. As time allows, students will learn how to cord and weave hanji (called jiseng in Korean) to create woven pieces. Be prepared to work hard and walk away with a wide array of samples and new techniques!

Description: Take a walk with me. This class will start off with a short walk around Pyramid Atlantic in search for items to add to paper, such as rusted metal, leaves and other objects/plant materials. We will then head back to the studio to make paper using Western sheet forming. Students are encouraged to bring other things such as lace, string, mesh and anything else they would like to see embedded into paper. Please wear clothes that can get dirty and rain boots... or any shoes that are waterproof.

Description: This three week intensive will allow students to make a book from start to finish. The first week will be focused on discussing book structure options, and making paper. Description: Celebrate Earth Day and be creative at the same time! Learn how to make paper from rags. Harvest kitchen scraps to make gorgeous papyrus. Bring your own materials and we will incorporate them into pulp. This class will focus on recycling and using sustainable materials from local sources to make paper. You will learn basic sheet-forming techniques and be able to make as many sheets as we have time for. You will also learn how to for make and use vegetable dyes for naturally pigmenting your paper. No papermaking experience required. Instructions for collecting suitable materials provided upon registration. Bring waterproof shoes or galoshes and expect to get wet.
Spill, Splatter, Seep, Dip, Tear: Paper Staining Techniques

Description: Create your own happy accidents by experimenting with staining and tearing paper at the sheet-forming stage. You will learn techniques for working different pigmenting agents into the paper while it is still damp, resulting in amorphous areas of color, ranging from delicate washes, to heavy blots. We will also create exaggerated deckles by tearing the paper before it is pressed, breaking the sheet out of its rectangular mould. These truly one-of-a-kind papers can hold their own as minimalist pieces, or serve as the intriguing foundation for drawing, collage, monoprint, and silkscreen. Basic papermaking experience is required. Bring rubber gloves and waterproof shoes/galoshes/or boots and expect to get wet. Abaca pulp, aqueous pigments, India ink, and plant dyes will be provided.

Description: Participants in this workshop will learn how to create their own gel transfers (also known as acrylic lifts) using basic materials. A transfer or lift is the suspension of ink within a hardened and transparent material that can be transferred to a number of materials and surfaces that are otherwise unprintable. Students will learn the creative process from capture to print through elements of composition as well as the technical skills to produce their own gel transfers. We will also cover variations and alternate effects to expand the creativity of the student. Artists in all mediums are welcome to explore and work in the process into their own preferred mediums.
Participants well learn about the creative processes relative to a specific series and explore the emotional context of their own work. This is done throughout the workshop as a way to reinforce the “Why” we make art and support our concept with technical skills.

Description: In this class you will be introduced to the burin, learn how to handle the tools while engraving into a copper plate, and the process of wiping and printing with the plates. The results are beautiful marks that look distinct from other types of intaglio process. The lines can be deep and dark or extremely delicate and light. The class is open to any printmaking skill level and you will get a burin to keep and take with you.
