PRINTMAKING
Woodcut Portraits

Description: In this 2 day class we will use the expressive technique of woodblock printing to create self portraits or portraits of others. Referencing German Expressionist prints and painters such as Frieda Kahlo, Alice Neel, and Vincent Van Gogh, we willl cover woodcut design and printing from start to finish. Participants should have some comfort with drawing. Beginner and intermediate printmakers welcome. |

Chine Collé Workshop
Saturday, September 18 from 10am-4pm
Instructor: Melanie Lower
Tuition: $120 (plus $25 materials fee)
Description: Add texture, color and nuance to your intaglio prints using the little known technique of chine collé. With chine collé part or all of an image is printed on a delicate paper, which pulls finer detail off the plate, and is bonded to a heavier paper. We will see examples, discuss ways to incorporate the technique into your own works, learn to trace and cut to size japanese paper, print and bond papers, and experiment with various papers and configurations. Workshop for those with some etching experience wishing to enrich and further develop their etchings. Please bring already etched plates.

Introduction to block printing on fabric

Description: Learn to print and design your own fabric for clothing, furniture, and other decorating purposes. This workshop will cover the basics of creating a design, introduction to the materials used, carving a block, and printing. Participants are encouraged to bring drawings or copies of images they would like to use. No previous experience with printmaking necessary.

Letterpressed Posters with Wood Type

The Art of Aquatint

Description: Add richness and depth to your etchings through aquatint- the process by which a copper plate is finely pitted to create smooth and rich tones.Also learn techniques for scraping and burnishing to create an even wider range of darks and lights. Class will also cover rosin, spray paint and sugar-lift methods! This workshop is geared towards those with at least a little experience with etching. Add to your printmaking repertoire by learning the art of aquatint.

The class will cover how to set metal type, use a Chandler & Price Pilot tabletop platen press, troubleshoot, and clean up and maintain the press. Each participant will print a few lines of text of their own choosing on business card
to postcard-sized paper.

Letterpressed Holiday Cards

Description: Make your own holiday cards and come away with letterpress skills too! In this small group workshop, you will design a holiday card using metal type and print up to 30 cards on a Vandercook press. (Bring whatever cards you'd like!) Suitable for beginners.

Letterpressed Wedding Invitations
Two Saturdays, Jan 8 and 22 plus one 4-hour individual appointment

Tuition: $375 per individual or $425 per couple (plus the cost of a polymer plate and your own paper or other materials.)
Enrollment: 4-7 individuals or couples, but no more than 10 people
Description: Thinking of making your own invitations for a wedding or commitment ceremony? During group sessions, you will work with a graphic designer to develop an invitation or save-the-date card, troubleshoot your design, and learn how to print photopolymer plates on a Vandercook press. Then enjoy individualized attention as you print your invitations during a one-on-one session.

Make Your Own Valentines!

Deconstructed/Collaged Prints

Description: Add texture, color, and dimension to your prints with layers. In this 2 day class we will create Linocut prints and Pronto Plate prints --then dissect them! Cutting, tearing, layering--even swapping images with other classmates-- will produce exciting collaged prints.

Description: This class will teach the fundamentals of observational drawing, measurement, and proportion using a variety of drawing media. We will explore contour line and value, creating dynamic compositions, and learning the fundamental elements of design. This class is perfect for students working in printmaking but wanting to develop better compositions or feel more confident in their drawing skills.

Intro to Letterpress

Description: A small group workshop for beginners who want a thorough introduction to traditional printing. The workshop will cover how to set metal type, how to use a Vandercook press, how to troubleshoot to get good prints, how to clean up and maintain the presses, and some information about how to use digital technology in combination with letterpress. Each participant will print a few lines of text of their own choosing on postcard to poster-sized paper.

The Next Step: Using Photopolymer on the Vandercooks

Printed Portfolios
Tuesday Evenings October 5, 12 and 19th

Description: House your treasured collection of photographs, prints or samples in a customized portfolio. Working from Books, Boxes and Portfolios by Franz Zeier for inspiration, we will design, screenprint and construct your one-of-a-kind portfolio. The first session will cover preparing your artwork for screenprinting, selecting a portfolio design, creating a template and settling on a color palette. Next, we will screenprint your 1 or 2-color design onto bookcloth or paper. The final class will cover cutting boards, hinges and gluing the components together to create the finished portfolio.

Rubylith for Screenprinters
Sunday, October 3

Enrollment: minimum of 3 and maximum of 6
Description: Do you enjoy using an X-acto knife or scissors to cut intricate designs? Rubylith is a masking film used in printmaking to create hand-cut stencils. Its use is technically outdated, due to the ease of using a computer to produce imagery. However, cutting and aligning Rubylith, with an X-acto knife or scissors, is still a fun way to prepare images for screenprinting. In this class you will create a hand-cut stencil using rubylith, and expose and print your image. Suitable for all levels of screenprint experience. The Rubylith will be supplied, but bring your own X-acto knife and scissors, your ideas for images, and printmaking paper on which to print.

Screenprinting for Kids and Parents
Saturday, November 6
10am to 3pm
Instructor: Rebecca Katz
Tuition: $130 (per team of two people)
Enrollment: Max: 5 children and 5 adults/Min: 2 children and 2 adults
Description: In this one-day workshop, children are invited to explore their creativity by creating a drawing to screenprint on paper or a T-shirt. Each child must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, who will also be an active participant. Suitable for ages 8 to 11.
Bring ideas or drawings for your project, and bring paper and t-shirts on which to print. It is recommended that you bring a lunch and an extra activity for the child, as there will be some downtime between stages of the screenprinting process. Wear clothes that can get dirty.

Cut Paper: Pull, Print and Create

Description: Over the course of three sessions students will pull their own sheets of paper, print designs of their making from linoleum blocks and cut into them to make fantastic collage style creations. In the first session students will gain a basic understanding of Western papermaking, pulling, pressing and drying sheets made from their choice of several western plant fibers. In the second session students will create and print linoleum blocks onto the sheets that they made and in the third session cut into their prints, making use of layers and positive and negative space. |

BOOK ARTS
Box Your Book! - Clamshell Box Making Workshop
Two Tuesdays, September 14th and 21st, 7:00PM-9:30PM
Instructor: Jody McLean and Patricia Lee
Tuition: $100 (plus $10 materials fee payable to instructor)
Description: Take your handmade book to the next level, and make it a custom made clamshell box! This workshop will teach you how to make a clamshell box for your books. A boxed book is protected from damaging environmental effects such as UV light and humidity. The instructors will provide a pre-cut kit to learn how to construct the box, but we will also teach you how to make the measurements for a book of any size. This class can work as a continuation of the Intermediate Bookbinding Workshop (offered in August, see Pyramid Atlantic Workshop
Schedule for details). The measurements for one of the books made in the Intermediate Bookbinding Workshop will fit perfectly inside of the
box we will make in the Box Making Workshop. However, all intermediate students are welcome, relevant book measurements will be given to those who are not continuing from a previous workshop.

Making Movable Books in the Classroom

Instructor: Paul Johnson, England-based internationally recognized book artist. He is most known for his pioneering work in developing literacy through the book arts, and is the author of over fifteen titles, including A book of One's Own and Literacy Through the Book Arts. Description: Making movable books with your student is the perfect way to unlock their verbal and visual ideas, and meet your classroom goals. Intermediate Bookbinding Workshop Series

Description: Do you have some experience with bookbinding, but want to take it to the next level? In this series of two evening workshops we
will experience the delights of three exposed sewing structures, including longstitch, two-needle coptic stitch, and sewing over tapes.
Each student will use decorative paper and a rainbow of colored waxed linen thread to create their own collection of uniquely designed
books. This brand new format will give you the chance to explore how different materials and book designs can showcase your art or writing.

secret to this very unique binding style was lost until it was recently resurrected by Hedi Kyle. Don't miss out on this opportunity for a new way for making a flexible hardcover book! It is perfect for any books you want to make that need to lay flat, like journals or sketch books, for example. Starbook

Do you want a new and interesting way to display photos, mementos, and collectible paper ephemera? The starbook looks like a regular album when closed, but when opened and tied together, it blossoms into a multi-layered star with pockets. Kits will be provided with all that
you need to make your book, though you can bring your own decorative paper choices and incorporate them into your design. Students should have a strong understanding of basic bookbinding skills for this class (covering boards, punching covers and text, etc.). A detailed supply list will be provided upon enrollment.

Elegant Portfolios
Two-day workshop, October 16th and 17th, 10am-4pm
Instructor: Bob Muens

Description: In this class students will learn how to make their own archival custom portfolio suitable for holding mounted photographs, prints, books or small paintings. Based on traditional Japanese and Chinese wrapper cases, these portfolios add a modern twist by using contemporary materials to create elegant and distinctive housings for your art and books. These archival portfolios not only protect your art, but also create a dramatic presentation when opened. Detailed instruction and demonstrations guides each student through the steps needed to construct their own portfolio. You will learn how to measure, prepare, cut and assemble the materials for that perfect one-of-a-kind custom fit.

**Pyramid Atlantic Refund Policy
To withdraw or receive a refund, payees request must be made at least one week prior to the first class. We will retain a $50 processing fee. You will be issued a 50% refund for withdrawal requests made within 7 days of the first class. No refunds will be granted after the second day of class. Classes with insufficient enrollment may be canceled prior to the first class. Every effort will be made to notify you regarding cancellation a week before the first class. If Pyramid cancels the class before the first class, an automatic full refund will be issued |
