PULP SALES
Pyramid Atlantic sells paper pulp in 5 gallon pails (1 lb. dry weight),
directly from the beater. When
picking up pulp, please bring your own 5-gallon, lidded buckets. Five gallons
of sheet-forming pulp makes approximately 30 to 40 sheets of medium
weight 8.5" x 11" paper. This pulp carries inclusions well and is a
relatively short fiber suitable for drawing, printmaking, and pulp
painting. Internal sizing can be added for a flat rate of $4.00.
Purchases must be made in person at our
studios in downtown Silver Spring, MD.
Pulp is available in a variety of fibers:
- Recycled Pulp is
made from print paper and other paper materials from Pyramid. This
pulp is good for sheet forming and casting. Great for school groups!
- Cotton Linter is from
the cotton fibers closest to the seed and is a natural white.
- Cotton Rag
is 100% cotton from garment cuttings broken down to near-thread form.
The fibers are markedly longer then those from linter and form stronger
sheets ideal for book papers, photographic base sheets, printmaking
and watercolor.
- Abaca/Cotton Mix is a
combination of the two; when beaten together it gives a lovely off-white
sheet.
- Abaca Fibers (from the
leaves of the banana tree) are a pale, creamy tan with longer fibers
than cotton. (Available in bleached white, by request.)
- Flax/Spanish Flax is a
bast or stem fiber which after spinning and processing is called linen.
This fiber when beaten yields a pulp which has great shrinkage characteristics.
Overbeating can yield a more translucent paper.

Meaning of beating times:
1 hour beating is suitable for casting. Cotton linters
or abaca work well for this beating time.
2 hours beating of any pulp will produce a pulp suitable
for sheet forming.
3 - 4 hours beating makes a well beaten pulp that is
particularly good for pulp spraying and thin lamination. This beating
time produces a translucent, strong paper.
Superfine beating (4-8 hours) produces even more strength
and translucency. Flax, Abaca or cotton rag works well at this beating
time.
One quart fine used for pulp painting. Pigmented abaca
or flax will produce a more translucent color and cotton will produce
a more opaque color.
