Paper is made in the beater so goes an old adage. Join Resident Papermaker Gretchen Schermerhorn as she unveils the mysteries of pulp making using Pyramid Atlantic’s Hollander Beaters. In this class, you will learn the essential steps to creating quality pulp to make quality paper for printmaking, sculpture, books, etc. Through various experiments you will learn how to formulate the pulp to your own specifications whether you want your pulp to result in paper that is thick, thin, opaque or transparent. During class we will beat various fibers: cotton and linen rag, half stuff, cotton linter, abaca, and flax, to understand the effects of different beating times. Students will learn how to keep a log of beating times so they will see the results of their experiments. Also, beater maintenance will be discussed. This class is highly recommended for anyone interested in renting the Hollander beaters.
