Carborundum Printing
Charles Cohan
February 23 & 24 from 9:30 - 4:00 pm
$220 (members: $205) ·  $45 materials fee
Collograph is one of the more expansive and exciting of the recent innovations in printmaking. The physicality of it processes and the direct immediacy of its production provide a media free of the material restraints of traditional chemically dependent techniques. This workshop will explore the diverse possibilities and capabilities of collograph plate printmaking. Using the carborundum method as a foundation, the projects will present a wide range of additional processes including woodcut, drypoint, stencil and photo transfer. Inking and printing applications will address the techniques of relief, intaglio, monoprint, simultaneous color application, and chine collé.

The Art of Aquatint Processes

Jake Muirhead
April 1, 8, & 15 from 6:30 – 9:30 pm
$180 (members: $165) $40 materials fee
Aquatint is the process that brings depth and dimension to printmaking. This is a method whereby an intaglio plate is finely pitted to create a wide range of tones from rich and velvety darks to subtle lights. Students will learn how to apply the aquatint as well as methods to properly wipe and print their plates to reveal the delicate range of tonalities. Several variations of the aquatint technique will be taught including sugar-lift, creeping-bite, and methods of scraping and burnishing the plate to achieve luminous effects. There are few intaglio processes that offer a greater range of possibilities than aquatint. This course offers an opportunity to explore those possibilities.
