STUDIO RENTAL
Pyramid
Atlantic invites artists to explore print and paper media at its studios
and offers collaborative opportunities and technical assistance. Normal
hours for studio rental and artist collaboration are 9:00 am to 5:00
pm. Additional hours may be accommodated and must be arranged in advance.
Arrangements can also be made for monthly rentals and evening hours.
Minimum rental time is 1/2 day.

Pyramid Atlantic invites artists and papermakers
to explore the possibilities of handmade paper through individual
experimentation, group rental, and staff-assisted collaboration.
The papermill is a professional space with 1# and 5# Hollander beaters,
a 4’x8’ Hillier
vacuum table, 3 hp compressor and pulp sprayer, 22” x 30” and 30” x
40” hydraulic presses, and various kinds of moulds and deckles. It
can accommodate conventional sheet formation, oversized sheet production (up
to a 4’x8’ mould), and three-dimensional work. There is a drying
system for sheets up to 22” x 30”.
Open
Paper Studio
- Up to four participants may rent
the workshop on a shared basis. The Rental fee includes use of
all papermaking equipment and an orientation given by the resident
papermaker.
- Hours:
1:00-5:00 pm weekdays
- Rate: $80 per person
plus a flat $20 fee for one hour of staff assistance.
Individual
Papermill Rental
- Rental without assistance is available
to those who have completed an artistic collaboration or papermaking
workshop with Pyramid Atlantic and wish to continue independently. Rental
fee includes use of all papermaking equipment.
Hours: Full-day 9:00 am-5:00 pm
- Half-day 1:00-5:00 pm
- Rate: $120
per day; $60 per half-day
Artistic
Collaboration in Paper
- Staff –assisted collaboration
involves consultation on the artist’s project, preparation of the
appropriate pulps and supplies by studio staff, and full-time assistance
throughout the day. This can also take the form of private instruction. Collaboration
fees include use of all papermaking equipment in the studio and two 5-gallon
buckets of pulp prepared to the specifications of the artist. Additional
pulp, chemicals, custom-built materials for the project, and packaging
and shipping of completed works will be charged.
- Hours: 9:00 am-5:00
pm, additional hours must be arranged with staff in advance.
- Rate: $300
for the initial day, $250 for each additional day. A preliminary
consultation fee of $30 per hour will be charged prior to studio time.
PRINTSHOP
Pyramid Atlantic's printshop is a spacious, professional shop with printing
facilities that include:
- A 36" x 60" American French Tool etching press;
- A 36" x 60" Takach-Garfield lithography press; rollers
and brayers, plate warmers and drying racks.
- Silkscreen, lithography and solar plate equipment
and a graphic arts darkroom.
- A Nuarc Metal Halide Exposure System platemaker and
digital imaging equipment offer photographic possibilities for artists.
Letterpress facilities include:
- Two Vandercook 4T proofing presses
- 58 cases of foundry type
- Furniture and a printer's saw
- Professional Bindery - 2 nipping presses, guillotine,
kutrimmer, tools
Artists who know how to use the press and the accompanying
equipment can rent the studios for private use. Prior to rental,
printmakers must arrange to meet with a resident artist printmaker to
show their prints and discuss their needs in using the printshop.
Studio rental fees cover costs for equipment and upkeep and the following materials:
solvents, newsprint, rags and acids. Rental fees do not cover inks, tarlatans,
etching grounds, paper or other special needs.
Rates: $80 a day; hourly press rates by arrangement.
MONOTYPE AND EXPLORATORY PRINTING
Exploring singular impressions and plate making with a printer
can be arranged for $25 an hour; press rental $80 a day. Fees do not
include ink and paper.
COLLABORATION, PROOFING, AND DEVELOPMENT FOR EDITIONS
In collaboration with the artist in Pyramid's studio,
the printer will assist the artist in setting up the printing area, mixing inks,
inking plates, running the press and providing technical information for the
development of the printing procedures for editioning. Printing processes include
lithography, monotype, letterpress, intaglio and relief printing.
Rates: Printer's fee is $25 an hour; press rental is $80 a day. Fees do not include
ink and paper.
EDITION PRINTING
Prints will be editioned from already prepared plates. A bon a tirer print
or an approval to print will be pulled for the artist's approval; the printer
will print the edition. The actual edition printing is scheduled around the studio
resident's and rental schedules. The printer will receive the bon a tirer and
any extra printers or assistants will receive a printer's proof. Pyramid
will receive three prints for its archives.
Rates: Printer's fee is $50 an hour; studio rental $80 a day.
Fees do not include ink and paper.
CONTRACT PRINTING AND PUBLISHING
Prints will be editioned by master printers. Complete contract services
are available, which include planning and development of the print project, preparation
of plates, and edition printing. Print projects are contracted on a per project

PYRAMID ATLANTIC STAFF FOR PRINT AND PAPER COLLABORATIONS
FOR THE CREATION OF ARTISTS PROJECTS AND EDITION PRINTING
Susan Goldman received her MFA in Printmaking from Arizona State
University, Tempe, and her BFA in Printmaking from Indiana University, Bloomington,
in 1981. From 1991 through 2000 she was Special Projects Coordinator and Master
Printer at Pyramid Atlantic. Goldman is a printmaking faculty member at George
Mason University. She was President of Maryland Printmakers, Inc. She is Founder
and Co-Curator since 1993 of the interdisciplinary community arts project, The
Art of Work, The Work of Art, TM.)
Brian Garner teaches printmaking at the University of Maryland College
Park, Towson University, and MICA. He received his BFA from MICA and is a graduate
of the Tamarind Master Printer’s Program. He was a collaborative printer
at Goya-Girl Press in Baltimore from 1997-2002. Currently, he maintains his own
printmaking studio in Baltimore where he collaborates with artists on various
projects.
Gretchen Schermerhorn is currently the Resident Papermaker and
Outreach Coordinator at Pyramid Atlantic. She received her MFA from Arizona State
University in 2004, with a specialization in Printmaking and Papermaking. She
has completed artist residencies at Columbia College Center for Book and Paper
and California State University. She has taught classes various classes including
Papermaking, 2D Design, Mixed-Media, Printmaking and Drawing. Her prints, books
and paper works have been exhibited nationally and internationally in such places
as New York, Boston, Santa Fe, and Phoenix. Her work is in public and permanent
collections including the San Francisco Public Library and Amity Art Foundation.
Her current body of work consists of printed paper garments, and deals with ideas
of socialization versus biology.
