Bookmaking Associate

OVERVIEW:

The Pyramid Bookmaking Associates are crucial to keeping the bindery thriving, relevant and dynamic. This Artistic Associate position offers a unique opportunity to engage with Pyramid’s creative community,  and work alongside professionals in a sharing/collaborative environment. 

 

In exchange for 12 volunteer hours a month (10 onsite, 2 offsite), the Bookmaking Associate will have 24 hour access to studios and equipment and receive a 40% discount on most workshops. The Bookmaking Associate also has the opportunity to teach classes, assist or collaborate with resident artists, and submit artwork for consideration to sell in the Pyramid Atlantic shop. The Bookmaking Associate reports to the Artistic Director and position is a three year contract.

Pyramid Studio Associate Responsibilities:

  • Act as a representative and ambassador for Pyramid—Greet guests, give tour if guests are interested. Exude pride in organization and help spread the word about programs, classes and events Pyramid offers. Answer general inquiries to students and visitors, such as open hours, studio rates, workshops, and the functions of each program studio. 

  • Security – make sure that doors are locked after exiting building during closed hours. While working in the studio, Bindery Associates should be prepared for rapidly responding to emergency situations, e.g. fire, health problems, who to call, etc. 

  • Commitment to participating in Pyramid’s creative community—must be in attendance in 4 of 6 staff meetings per year, and participate in staff dialogue via Basecamp and email. 

  • Commitment to bindery etiquette and best practices. 

 

Volunteer Hours (12 a month):
Onsite Duties:

  • Bindery Maintenance and Program Assistance (8 hours a month): Bindery Maintenance: Ensure that bindery is safe, clean and in working order. Duties include organizing, cleaning up around guillotine, board shear, and other equipment. Program Assistance: Includes preparing and/or helping out with a fundraiser or event, preparing for a visiting artist’s workshop, sitting on the book arts steering committee

    This time is flexible, but needs to be put on the Resident Artists and Associates work hours calendar. 


Offsite Duties:

  • Communication to stakeholders/students/potential clients (2 hours a month): Reply to emails in a prompt and professional manner; Reach out to new or potential clients; Help promote Pyramid’s programs to the bindery's roster of current students.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a communal studio, co-op, art center, etc. 

  • Two years of teaching experience, preferably in bookmaking, artist books and bookbinding 

  • Proven track record of leading in a culturally-competent manner with a global perspective, preferably with experience working with diverse groups

  • Significant professional activity, including solo and group exhibitions, press, published writings, invited artist talks, residencies, awards, etc.

  • Ability to balance studio practice and other responsibilities with teaching and service to Pyramid

  • Leadership potential, with strong communication and interpersonal skills along with the flexibility to work with Artistic Director other Pyramid Artistic Staff members

 

Teaching/Assistance Rates:

  • An hourly rate of $50 is charged to students for one on one lessons. $35 goes to the associate. 

  • When teaching classes/workshop, an hourly contact fee breaks down as follows: 

    • 2-3 students in workshop—$50 an hour

    • 4-6 students in workshop—$55 an hour

    • 7-8 students in workshop—$60 an hour
