Papermaking Associate

The Pyramid Atlantic Papermaking Associates are crucial to keeping the papermill thriving, relevant and dynamic.  This work-exchange position offers a unique opportunity to engage with Pyramid’s creative community,  and work alongside professionals in a sharing/collaborative environment.


In exchange for working 12 volunteer hours a month for Pyramid Atlantic (10 onsite, 2 offsite), the Papermaking Associate will have 24-hour access to studios and equipment and receive a 40% discount on most workshops. The Papermaking  Associate also has the opportunity to teach classes, collaborate with resident artists, and sell artwork in the Pyramid Atlantic shop. The Papermaking Associate reports to the Artistic Director and the position is a three-year contract.

Pyramid Studio Associate Responsibilities:

  • Act as a representative and ambassador for Pyramid Atlantic—greet guests and give a tour if guests are interested; Show pride in organization and help spread the word about programs, classes and events Pyramid offers; Answer general inquiries from students and visitors, such as open hours, studio rates, workshops, and the functions of each studio.

  • Commitment to participating in Pyramid’s creative community—must be in attendance in 4 of 6 staff meetings, sign up to help with 3 jobs per year (e.g., steering committee for print symposium, attend an artist talk or exhibition, or help out with Pyramid event for festivals, etc.), and participate in staff dialogue via Basecamp and email.

  • Commitment to papermaking etiquette and best practices.


Specific Duties:

  • 1 hour a week—Ensure that paper studio is safe, clean and in working order. Duties include organizing, cleaning, beating pulp for events and outreach, repair moulds and deckles, etc.  

  • 1-hour a week—email correspondence with potential students, stakeholders, studio renters, etc.

  • 1-hour a week—contributing to Pyramid’s creative community by leading a happy hour, members event, or Make + Take; attend staff meeting;  participate in steering committee for print symposium or Book Arts Fair; attend artist talk or exhibition; or help out at with Pyramid event for festival, for examples.

  • Teaching is not required, but welcome! The associate will be paid for their teaching hours—these hours can not be counted towards the required weekly volunteer hours.


Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a communal studio, co-op, art center, etc.

  • Two years of teaching experience, preferably papermaking or paper arts

  • Proven track record of leading in a culturally-competent manner with a global perspective, preferably with experience working with diverse groups

  • Significant professional activity, including solo and group exhibitions, press, published writings, invited artist talks, residencies, awards, etc.

  • Ability to balance studio practice and other responsibilities with teaching and service to Pyramid

  • Leadership potential, with strong communication and interpersonal skills along with the flexibility to work with the Artistic Director and other Pyramid Studio Associate members

A Note About Pyramid and Covid Safety:

While we are encouraged by the numbers reported locally and nationally, Pyramid is committed to the health of our artists and visitors. At this time, we are choosing to be more conservative than the local ordinances. We have increased our studio capacity numbers in some areas but will  continue to operate the building at a reduced capacity and require mask wearing in all public spaces.
