MASHUP: Annual Members’ Exhibition Goes Unconventional

Updated: 7 days ago

Hyattsville, MD—In a twist on Pyramid’s annual juried member show, this year’s exhibition is completely uncurated with only one restriction: works cannot be larger than 30” on any side. Pyramid Members are exhibiting works of their choice. The resulting show is a “mashup” of styles, mediums, and price points hung riotously throughout the gallery, salon-style. Modest prizes and bragging rights will be awarded for “Founder’s Choice,” and the “People's Choice.”

MASHUP opens Friday, April 26th with a reception from 6:30–9 pm. The exhibition runs through May 26, 2019. Gallery hours: 10 am– 6 pm, Tuesday–Saturday and 12–5 pm on Sunday. The exhibition and reception are FREE and open to the public. Pyramid Atlantic is located at 4318 Gallatin Street, Hyattsville Maryland 20781. More at pyramidatlanticartcenter.org or 301-608-9101.

“Sometimes you just want to show something that might not check a curator or juror’s box,” remarks Kate Taylor Davis, Pyramid’s Executive Director. “We also have a wide array of members and wanted to have a show that was about finding ways to include rather than exclude.” Pyramid had a great response to its call for artists, with over 80 artists, about 1/3 of the organization’s membership, participating!” As to what to expect, not even the staff of Pyramid can be sure until the artists drop off their work next week. “Looking at the artist roster, the only sure thing is that we’re in for some surprises.”

In its open call for the exhibition, Pyramid had far more submissions than expected. “It’s clearly a topic that people can relate to,” says Schermerhorn. While there is a strong showing from local artists, the show also features printmakers from PA, WV, MA, TX, and LA. The exhibition features work from Cynthia Back, Christy Ball, Carol Barsha, Tracey Bullington, Amy Callner, Michele Casto, Andy Clark, Kristine DeNinno, Maggie Gourlay, Michael Hagan, David Hawkins, Robert Howsare, Carrie Iverson, Sue Johnson, Katie Kaplan, Nilou Kazemzadeh, Alice Kresse, Aselin Lands, Matt McLaughlin, Ursula Minervini, Edie Overturf, Rick Pieto, Ira Tattelman, and Sharon Wolpoff.

This exhibition is made possible in part through funding from the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, Department of Parks and Recreation, Prince George’s County.
