A Hybrid (Virtual/In-Studio) Workshop!

Mezzotint is a subtractive printmaking process that traditionally involves using a rocker tool to incise a fine, toothy texture into a copper plate.  Parts of the texture are then strategically scraped and burnished away to produce a full range of values when printed, from whitest whites, velvety blacks and everywhere in between.  Usually, the traditional process of rocking a plate is time-consuming and can take days, weeks or even months.  In this hands-on workshop, we will learn a faster, more contemporary method of preparing mezzotint-like textured plates using carborundum and water. Students will have the opportunity to prepare their own plate, scrape and burnish their image, and finally print proofs and a small edition.

The students will meet for 4 sessions total using the following schedule:

  • Day 1, Intro and First Steps: Thursday, June 3, 6pm-7:30pm via Zoom—all students

  • Day 2, Plate work: Saturday, June 5, 10am-1pm in the Gallery—all students

  • Day 3, Proofs, feedback, and final printing: Saturday, June 12, 10am-4pm OR Sunday, June 13, 10am-4pm—only 3 students per session

  • Day 4, Final recap/reflections: Tuesday, June 15, 6-7:30pm EST via Zoom—all students

Registration closes May 25, 2021. Your registration includes a $10 materials fee to cover consummable materials provided during the in-studio sessions, including the carborundum, tarlatan, and newsprint. Students will receive an additional list of materials (with helpful links) to purchase for class, as well as any helpful handouts about the process, as well as a quick 1-page "how-to" on downloading and using the Zoom video app.

PLEASE NOTE: All virtual sessions will be recorded for Pyramid Atlantic's private use to better optimize our programming and share as examples for funders. You may mute your microphone or turn off your camera if you do not wish to be recorded.

Pyramid is dedicated to protect the safety and health of its employees and guests.
