A Virtual Workshop!

With a few basic pieces of equipment, some mulberry fiber (Thai Kozo), and some garden clippings, and you too can make paper right in your backyard! This workshop will show you the ins and outs of setting up a small paper making operation at home. During the first day of the workshop, students will be shown how to cook and process the mulberry and other plant fibers, how to make a mould and deckle (the paper making frame), and how to set up your studio or other space for papermaking. The second day will cover the process of hand beating the fibers, how to form sheets of paper along with some artistic variations, and several methods of pressing and drying the paper. Students will leave the workshop with at least 20 sheets and leftover plant fiber to continue making more paper, as well as recorded notes for harvesting, cooking, and beating fiber for future reference. Note: The size of the mould and deckle is different (larger) that the one made in Pyramid’s DIY Mould and Deckle workshop.

Registration closes June 15, 2021 to allow time for students to receive/purchase their materials. Your registration includes a materials fee to cover the purchase and shipping of a class "kit," which includes 1/2 lb. of Thai Kozo fiber, 1 tablespoon of formation aid, mould and deckle frame for paper 10" x 10" in size, canvas stretcher bars, polypropylene heat shrinking screen, paint strainer bag, weather stripping tape, Craft felt, 12" x 12" in size, 1 cup of soda ash. You will also receive an additional list (with helpful links) to purchase/gather other needed supplies, any available handouts about the process, as well as a quick 1-page "how-to" on downloading and using the Zoom video app.

PLEASE NOTE: All workshops will be recorded for Pyramid Atlantic's private use to better optimize our programming and share as examples for funders. You may mute your microphone or turn off your camera if you do not wish to be recorded.
