A Virtual Workshop!

In this workshop we will mix traditional and contemporary methods of block printing with indigo dye paste. Students will learn how to design and carve their own relief block, how to create a paste with the indigo dye, how to mix the fix bath that bonds the paste to the fabric, and then how to put the indigo through the classic "reduction" process, so that it is permanent and colorfast. Two large tea-towels will be provided to each student, however they are welcome to print on their own t-shirts, tote bags, or any other fabric on hand. There will be a small list of additional materials that you'll need to have on hand otherwise, including: one 5-gallon bucket, a wooden dowel or spoon, Emulsion blender or whisk, and a plastic quart container with lid.

Level: Intermediate—previous relief printmaking experience is suggested, but not required.

Note: Registration closes August 18, 2020 to allow time for the instructor to package and mail the materials kit. This kit containing the chemistry and main art materials needed. This kit will be packaged with the utmost of care, using gloves and a mask, to ensure that it's safe. Be sure to add a note to your order with your mailing address if it differs from your billing address!
