Did you know that you have a wealth of book-making materials passing through your home every day, often ending up in the trash or recycling? In this fun introductory class, students will learn to turn junk mail envelopes into clever pocketbooks using basic bookbinding and collage techniques. Two pocketbooks will be assembled during the class, so you’ll finish with a gift for a friend or family member. This structure is perfect for stashing cash and credit cards, tickets and ephemera, or any other small treasures.

Both novice and intermediate book makers welcome.

Bel Mills is a collage artist and book designer inspired by second-hand, vintage and commonplace paper. In her Northern Virginia studio, Scrap Paper Circus, she uses old books, magazines, maps, and office supplies—among other materials—to create one-of-a-kind journals and collaged artist books. She believes in reusing old paper not only as a method, but also as a muse. As she tells her students, second-hand paper frees an artist from worrying excessively about waste and allows her to experiment and take risks without agonizing about mistakes or about ruining precious materials. She embraces accidents and rejects persnickety bookbinding dogma except when absolutely necessary; infusing her work (and her classes) with a sense of possibility, whimsy and delight. Students discover handmade books are fun to make and a joy to use. They leave with clever, personalized journals they can fill with their own experiences, rather than precious art objects that will sit on a shelf. You can find more of Bel’s work on Facebook @scrappapercircus, Instagram @scrap_paper_circus and Etsy at ScrapPaperCircus. Her business website is still under construction and can be found at https://belwillem73.wixsite.com/scrappapercircus/
