THE INNATE THREAD Drawings and Prints by Virtuoso Lithographer Kathryn Polk Explore Family and Feminism

July 9, 2018

(Hyattsville, MD) Called a “virtuoso lithographer” by Juxtapoz Magazine, Kathryn Polk’s seemingly simple subject matter, women going about daily life, is deeply connected to her southern upbringing with “traditional” values of the 1950s and 60s. Through precisely rendered visual narratives referencing the past to the present, she depicts personal, humorous, and sardonic memories and thoughts through the eyes of all the women in her bloodline; hence, “The Innate Thread.”
THE INNATE THREAD opens August 3 with a reception from 6 – 9 pm. The exhibition runs through August 25, 2018. Gallery hours: 10 am - 6 pm Tuesday - Saturday and 12 - 5 pm on Sunday. Pyramid Atlantic is located at 4318 Gallatin Street, Hyattsville Maryland 20781.
Polk's narrative works depict women and everyday activities, chores, and relationships. These depictions are often playful and whimsical, contrasting with the underlying issues of alienation and subjugation
Printmaking is a second career for Polk, who didn’t find lithography until she was in her 50s. She is now one of the best known female lithographers in the states. Her work is well-regarded among the printmaking community and is included in permanent collections at museums and universities on several continents.
Born in 1952 in Memphis, Tennessee, Kathryn Polk studied painting at the Memphis Academy of Art and Memphis State University. In 2002, she began working with traditional stone lithography. Her lithographs can be found in permanent print collections throughout the world including in China, New Zealand, Korea, Wales, France and Argentina as well as in museums throughout the United States. She is currently co-owner of L VIS Press, a lithography print studio dedicated to the development of more eco- friendly stone lithography techniques. L VIS Press has recently moved to Solsberry, Indiana.
